Dear Kathryn,

I know I hurt you yesterday, and I cannot apologize enough for my actions. You were so happy, and I ripped your world apart with only a few words. I do love you, but I cannot subject you to this new side of me I’ve discovered. I’m scared of this side. I want you to live your life and find someone who can share everything with you. I want you to find a man who has no secrets.

You were right yesterday when you said this was about Gettysburg. I wish I could explain it to you, but I’m not sure you would believe me. Sometimes, I don’t believe what happened there. I’m sure you’re glad you didn’t marry me before the war, especially now.

I want to thank you for being my rock throughout the war. Sometimes your letters were the only thing keeping me sane, while we marched and fought endless battles. Your letters made the war bearable. You sent me a little piece of home with each letter you mailed. Thank you for being a wonderful woman. I keep them with me to remind myself of who I once was.

I want you to keep my ring as a reminder of how life can change in the blink of an eye. Asking you to marry me was the happiest day of my life, and I wish the war would have never happened. We could have been married with kids, if Lincoln wouldn’t have declared war.

Remember the man I was, the one who got down on bended knee to ask for your hand in marriage, not the man I’ve become. I pray you find a man who deserves you and who will treat you the way you deserved to be treated. It is my wish for you. I may not be in your future, but some man is. Once you discover him, marry him. I pray you find him soon, so you can start your life together.
